My friends Brody and Randy are working on something right now that requires a test of giving away some music. So they asked if i would be interested in giving away “At the Cross”, which I was totally happy to do. Actually I think the link below here will allow you to download the song as well.
We thought it might be cool if I posted something on my blog about the song today, so here’s a little bit about “At the Cross”….
I started writing music for our college ministry (Providence Baptist in Raleigh) about 4 years ago. Until this point in life I was not a song-writer. I just enjoyed playing music and listening to it. But, our college ministry would go through these studies together and I would have a huge desire to take what we had learned and write a song about it….to help us internalize what we were learning.
One of those topics was the doctrine of the Substitution. This doctrine has been so precious to me over the last few years. It’s been an amazing comfort to me to think that Christ took the wrath of God, which I justly deserved, and, in exchange, God sees and treats me as having the righteousness of Christ.
A few summers ago I was reading Pilgrims Progress, and loved the vivid image of Christian’s burden being taken away. So I started forming the song around that idea… that Christ lifts this burden of sin and separation from God, and we get Christ’s righteousness in return.
So, these were my thoughts while writing “At the Cross”…. hope it’s an encouragement.

This is a great song. It sounds great and I love your writing. Thanks for the download.
Dude, awesome song! What a great reminder of the amazing gift we from Christ.

got the link from brody’s blog.
really enjoyed the song.
thanks for sharing.
Hi again Daniel (and family). I’ve commented on your bloggy before about how much I was blessed by “Adore and Tremble,” but I wanted to say it again. Fantastic. I downloaded “At the Cross” (though I had already bought your EP), per Brody’s request. It’s good of you to offer the free download. Very nice I thought. Btw, you do a super job keeping up your blog. I know there’s a lot of excellent artists that are great in many ways, but struggle to “stay blog faithful.” Kuddos on that – I know it can be a challenge sometimes. Really enjoyed getting to read about your heart and process in writing this particular song. Sharing how the Lord spoke to you during that time was wonderful so thanks for that. Also, I agree that Pilgrims Progress is amazing and the vivid imagery of Christian’s burdens (and their removal) still stirs me to this day.
You and your family are walking hand-in-hand with Christ and it is truly inspiring. Can’t wait to see what He has in store.
Thank you again and God Bless – Melody Milbrandt
Good stuff. Very good stuff. Methinks I’m going to have to go get the rest of the album.
The song sounds amazing! I like contemporary songs that are woven together with old hymn themes.
that’s great stuff! I’d love to hear more about your songwriting process. It seems that you take a thoughtful, theological approach to your writing that’s uncommon (I typically just pick up a guitar and mumble some lyrics…)
This song is amazing! Thanks so much!!!
