I’ve started my Bible reading plan again, which means I’m in the Pentateuch (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy). It’s been a little while since I’ve read through these books consecutively, so I’ve been going to some good resources for help. I thought I might share those with y’all. Also, I would totally suggest reading through the bible in a year. It’s such a helpful tool for those of us that need discipline.
As for resources, I’ve been so helped by John Sailhamer over the years. I was blessed to have him as a seminary prof at SEBTS. His book, more than any others, have helped me understand the message of the Old Testament. Here are a few of his that I’ve found most helpful.
This is a pretty technical book, so you may not want to jump right into this one. But for being kind of a technical book, I’ve found it to be so devotional. The Pentateuch is the first place that God tells us what he is like….so it’s such an important book to listen to. Sailhamer will help you pay attention to the important stuff.
I have given out at least 10 of these to my friends and family over the years. I think its one of the most accessible Bible reading helps that I’ve ever come across. It’s like getting all the really cool nuggets from Sailhamer’s other books in one condensed book. The only thing that might be frustrating about this book is it’s brevity. But for it’s size and cost it’s an amazing book. I think you can usually get it for around $7-10.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for reading.
